<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The conclusions come from over 136,000 people who took part in 10 different studies.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Participants in the studies were mostly from the US and Japan.

The US studies asked people:

how useful they felt to others,

about their sense of purpose, and

the meaning they got out of life.

The Japanese studies asked people about ‘ikigai’ or whether their life was worth living.
The participants, whose average age was 67, were tracked for around 7 years.

During that time almost 20,000 died.

But, amongst those with a strong sense of purpose or high ‘ikigai’, the risk of death was one-fifth lower.

Despite the link between sense of purpose and health being so intuitive, scientists are not sure of the mechanism.

Sense of purpose is likely to improve health by strengthening the body against stress.

It is also likely to be linked to healthier behaviours.

Dr. Alan Rozanski, one of the study’s authors, said:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">“Of note, having a strong sense of life purpose has long
been postulated to be an important dimension of life, providing people
with a sense of vitality motivation and resilience.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Nevertheless, the medical implications of living with a high or low
sense of life purpose have only recently caught the attention of
investigators.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The current findings are important because they may open up new
potential interventions for helping people to promote their health and
sense of well-being.”

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">This research on links between sense of purpose in life and longevity is getting stronger all the time:

“A 2009 study of 1,238 elderly people found that those with a sense of purpose lived longer.

A 2010 study of 900 older adults found that those with a greater
sense of purpose were much less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

Survey data often links a sense of purpose in life with increased happiness.

No matter what your age, then, it’s worth thinking about what gives your life meaning.”
Dr. E.G. (Ernest Goodrich) Stillman, son of successful banker James Stillman, received degrees from Harvard and Columbia before pursuing a career in medical research. A devoted philanthropist and conservationist, Stillman was a generous benefactor of Harvard University. Like many Americans at the end of the 19th century, Stillman was drawn to Japan for its art, literature, culture, and history. During a trip to Japan in 1905, he purchased some 5,000 objects, including prints, photographs, books, and pamphlets. In the 1940s, Stillman made a large gift to the university, including a number of items from his personal collection of materials relating to Japan. Some of the photograph albums he donated contain hand-colored albumen prints taken by notable photographers such as Felice Beato, Baron Raimund von Stillfried, Kusakabe Kimbei, and Tamamura Kozaburo. These photo albums were popular souvenir items for foreign tourists. The albums would often include images of priests, pilgrims, actors, singers, street vendors, along with representative locations ranging from the urban markets to parks and gardens to spiritual shrines.

This new flock has had limited success in nesting, and the fragile
migratory population has a rocky road ahead. Why is it so hard for an
endangered species to recover? The new Eastern flock provides a unique

Portrait of Bashō - Hokusai

Matsuo Munefusa, alias Bashō (1644-94), was a Japanese poet and writer during the early Edo period. He took his pen name Bashō from his bashō-an, a hut made of plantain leaves, to where he would withdraw from society for solitude. Born of a wealthy family, Bashō was a Samurai until the age of 20, at which time he devoted himself to his poetry. Bashō was a main figure in the development of haiku, and is considered to have written the most perfect examples of the form. His poetry explores the beauties of nature and are influenced by Zen Buddhism, which lends itself to the meditative solitude sensed in his haiku. He traveled extensively throughout his lifetime. His 1689 five-month journey deep into the country north and west of Edo provided the insight for his most famous work Oku no hosomichi (Narrow Road to the Deep North). This great work was posthumoustly published in 1702 and is still read by most Japanse high school students.

Matsuo Bashō

(1644-1694) Even in Kyoto--
hearing the cuckoo's cry--
I long for Kyoto.

A crow
has settled on a bare branch--
autumn evening.

The crane's legs
have gotten shorter
in the spring rain.

Weathered bones
on my mind,
a wind-pierced body.

This road -
no one goes down it,
autumn evening
Another year gone--
hat in hand,
sandals on my feet.

The old pond--
a frog jumps in
sound of water.

The winter sun--
on the horse's back
my frozen shadow.

Seeing people off,
being seen off--
autumn in Kiso.

A cold rain starting
and no hat--
so?

Singing, flying, singing
the cuckoo
keeps busy.

Visiting the graves--
white-haired,
leaning on their canes.

Midnight frost--
I'd borrow
the scarecrow's shirt.

When the winter chrysanthemums go
there's nothing to write about
but radishes.

Look to this day:
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence.
The bliss of growth,
The glory of action,
The splendour of achievement
Are but experiences of time.

For yesterday is but a dream
And tomorrow is only a vision;
And today well-lived, makes
Yesterday a dream of happiness
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well therefore to this day;
Such is the salutation to the ever-new dawn!
*Kalidasa was the greatest of the sanskrit dramatists, and the first great name in Sanskrit literature after Ashvaghoshha. In the intervening three centuries between Asvaghosha (who had a profound influence on the poet) and Kalidasa there was some literary effort, but nothing that could compare with the maturity and excellence of Kalidasa's poetry.

Virtually no facts are known about his life, although colourful legends abound. Physically handsome, he was supposed to have been a very dull child, and grew up quite uneducated.

Through the match-making efforts of a scheming minister he was married to a princess who was ashamed of his ignorance and coarseness.
